Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Cultural diplomacy refers to the use of cultural exchange and the promotion of cultural assets to foster mutual understanding, strengthen international relations, and enhance a nation's soft power. In Nigeria, local festivals and traditions play a significant role in the nation’s cultural representation on the global stage. One such example is the Argungu Festival, held annually in Argungu Local Government Area (LGA), Kebbi State. This festival, renowned for its cultural vibrancy and traditional fishing contest, has the potential to serve as a platform for cultural diplomacy, promoting Nigerian culture to a global audience. Photography, with its power to capture and communicate cultural narratives, plays a pivotal role in enhancing the visibility and global reach of such events.
